Local Hurricane Information

AMELIA ISLAND HURRICANE EVACUATION INFORMATION

As of June 1, 2006, all of Amelia Island is in a Category 1 Hurricane Evacuation Zone.  This means a mandatory evacuation may be ordered even when the island is threatened by a tropical storm (vs. a hurricane).

Why evacuate for only a tropical storm?   The Thomas J. Shave Bridge on the northern end of the island closes when sustained winds reach 40 miles per hour.   The bridge on the south end of the island (near Long Point) connects to Herkscher Drive which is not considered a safe evacuation route.  Therefore, it is possible to be asked to evacuate well in advance of a storm.

Evacuation information usually is available 20 to 24 hours ahead of the storm’s arrival.  The estimated evacuation time for all of Amelia Island is 13 hours.   The Nassau County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will issue a pre-evacuation notice to the effect that “if the storm stays on track….”   This pre-evacuation notice will be a “heads-up” for those who have special needs and/or simply want to leave early.  If you have questions about this information you may go online at http://www.nassaucountyfl.com/index.aspx?nid=69 or telephone their office at 904-548-4980 or 800-958-3494.

AMELIA ISLAND PLANTATION HURRICANE PLAN

This plan specifies actions to be performed in the case of an evacuation.  Questions about evacuation or property damage can be obtained from the Nassau County Emergency Operations Center (see above).   AIP Security is not able to provide individual house checks to determine damage.

EVACUATION PLAN FOR AIP

  • Security has a team of 12 security personnel who will be the last to leave the island
  • Each security vehicle is equipped with a loudspeaker and siren for warning of an evacuation
  • Security vehicles will travel throughout Amelia Island Plantation announcing the mandatory evacuation
  • The main gate will be manned until AIP is evacuated.  An emergency generator will provide power for dispatch radios
  • Security personnel will provide traffic control and assist owners in evacuation
  • Security will receive storm updates and evacuation direction from Nassau County Emergency Operations Center (see above)
  • Security is required to report AIP property damage to the Nassau County Emergency Operations Center

RECOVERY ACTIONS (after the storm)

Chief Curtis, the AIPCA chairman of public safety/security, along with five representatives of Amelia Island Company will be among the first people allowed back on the island to assess damage.   Information on damage and roadways will be passed on to the Nassau County Emergency Operations Center.   Information on re-entry can be obtained from the Nassau County Emergency Operations Center in two ways : by computer at www.nassaufl-em.com or by telephone at 904-549-4980 or 800-958-3494.   Even if power is cut off, your Community Association will attempt to communicate through e-mail blasts for remote residents and other means locally.

YOUR PERSONAL HURRICANE PLAN

Each household needs to have its own Hurricane Plan well in advance of the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 - November 30).  AIP Security has assembled an excellent collection of materials for property owners available under the tabs labeled "Hurricane Preparedness” and “Security”.   This information includes a family preparedness guide, an emergency check list, a list of Nassau County Emergency Shelters, a list of motels in the Florida and Georgia area, and information on pet safety.   We encourage you to use these materials as you make your own hurricane plan for your household.
